With soaring energy costs, many motorists are opting for a fly/drive program. This concept allows you to fly to your destination, rent a car, camper, or motorhome and then return home by air.
Long popular in
European countries, the fly/drive travel concept is coming of age in Alaska and the Yukon. The time you save getting to your destination can be used for seeing more of the sights. This is particularly important if
you live in the Eastern or Southern regions of the U.S. Because of increasing demand, more and more firms are offering rental cars, campers, and motorhomes. This is particularly true in the Anchorage area.
Car rental companies such as Avis, Alamo, National, Enterprise, Thrifty, Payless, Budget, Dollar, and Hertz rent cars in most Alaska towns. Offices in Anchorage will accept reservations for towns in
other parts of the state. Budget and National have offices in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada (see index).
In some instances, it is possible to rent a car in one city and drop it off in another, i.e., rent it in Anchorage, drive to Denali National Park, and drop the car off in Fairbanks.
Since the number of vehicles available at any one location may be limited, it's best to have reservations-especially during July and
August. The same licensing regulations applicable to renting vehicles in other states, apply to car rental in Alaska.
Camper and motorhome rentals are available from several firms.
