Douglas, Alaska connected to Juneau by a 1564-foot steel bridge across Gastineau Channel, supports a sprawling residential area.  Douglas has only its “Glory Hole” left to tell visitors that here once flourished the Treadwell Mine, which yielded $66 million in gold-bearing ore during a 36-year period until it was destroyed by fire and cave-ins in 1917.
